History of the EWMC

History of the EWMC

The Electrical Workers Minority Caucus (EWMC) was founded in 1974 during the IBEW’s 30th International Convention in Kansas City, Missouri. At that time, minority voices were severely underrepresented in leadership roles across the union. A group of IBEW members of color came together to challenge this inequality and to advocate for fairness, inclusion, and equal opportunity within both the union and the electrical industry.

These founding members were trailblazers — fighting not only for representation, but also for justice and dignity for all workers. Their bold actions gave birth to a movement rooted in equity, solidarity, and service, a movement that continues to grow and thrive today.

Over the years, EWMC has expanded into a national organization with chapters across the United States and Canada, dedicated to leadership development, mentorship, civic engagement, and community service.

The Solano County Chapter was established in 2013, proudly rooted in IBEW Local 1245. Our chapter carries forward the mission of the EWMC by empowering underrepresented workers, creating pathways to leadership, and giving back through organizing and community service. For over a decade, we have worked to ensure that the legacy of those original trailblazers lives on.
