The Electrical Workers Minority Caucus (EWMC) was founded in 1974 as a response to the underrepresentation of minorities in leadership roles within the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW). A group of IBEW members of color came together during the 30th International Convention in Kansas City, Missouri, to address the lack of diversity and to advocate for equal opportunities within the union and the electrical industry. Their efforts led to the formation of the EWMC, which was established to promote equal opportunity and greater participation of minorities at all levels of the IBEW. The founding members believed in fighting for fairness, justice, and full inclusion—not only within the union but in workplaces and communities across the country. Since its inception, the EWMC has grown into a national organization with chapters throughout the United States and Canada. It remains committed to leadership development, mentorship, civic engagement, and community service. The EWMC continues to play a vital role in advancing diversity, strengthening union values, and empowering future generations of labor leaders. The Solano County Chapter proudly stands on the foundation laid by those original trailblazers, carrying forward the mission of equity, solidarity, and service.
